Pequeno is a warm and comfortable lounge bar with leather chairs and couches situated in the basement of the historic Savoy building. With our knowledgeable and friendly staff serving a variety of local and international wines, spirits, cocktails, single malt whiskeys and a selection of Cuban cigars, Pequeno offers an atmospheric alternative for those seeking refuge from the city bars. The bar features an open fire with authentic brick interior, and an outdoor smoking area.
Pequeño first opened its doors in march 2002. With its decor mainly sourced in spain it gave Dunedin its first “European style… hard to find… upmarket bar.” Dunedin now had something similar to those venues usually found down the backstreets of London, Madrid or Melbourne.
But it is not the first time this location had been used as a watering hole. The famous Savoy building has been operating in Dunedin since the early 1900’s. The space had been used for many years for Caretakers storage.
However earlier in the century a clandestine group of jazz and liquor enthusiasts enjoyed some famous parties in the room which then was simply called the Stables. Clues from the rooms original use as a stable still remains.
The premises was no doubt unlicensed which probably led to its popularity. Food was sent down to the revelers via a dumb-waiter from the Savoy upstairs. There are some interesting tales to be heard from those who are still around to remember.

- ON TAP -
A ‘Kiwi Classic’, Pilsner is a showcase for Nelson grown Riwaka hops. Its overt fruitiness begs comparison with Marlborough’s world-beating Sauvignon Blancs. Emerson’s Pilsner oozes citrus and passionfruit aromas and flavours. The beer’s palate shows a hint of early malt sweetness but develops a lengthy dry finish.

One of New Zealand’s first new generation pale ales and now something of a classic, Emerson’s 1812 is all about balance. Pouring a bright amber hue beneath a deep cream coloured head, the aroma hints at caramel and dark toffee balanced with a light citrusy fruitiness. Medium bodied, the palate first offers a marmalade-like combination of ripe citrus and caramelised malts before resiny hops come to the fore and lead into a lingering dry finish.

Porter is the oldest commercially brewed style. Dark, dry and mellow with some hop characteristics, it was the favourite tipple of London’s porters. London Porter pours a deep brown colour with reddish tints, and the aroma is toasty, with a hint of sweetness and some earthy hop notes. Firm-bodied, but not heavy, with a creamy texture, the dryish palate is full of roasted malt, coffeeish notes and a sustained bitterness.

A wonderfully drinkable interpretation of a classic English ale. Bookbinder is a blend of four malts combined with two classic Nelson grown hops (Fuggles and Riwaka). The beer pours an attractive reddish brown, with a cream coloured head. Bookbinder has a sweet, perfumey, malt and hop aroma with a soft, malty, fruit and vinous palate that is both full flavoured and refreshing with a long, gently drying finish.

An especially imported Bavarian yeast strain gives Emerson’s Weissbier its authentic German character. The beer pours a cloudy, pale golden colour, and has a sweet bready aroma with notes of banana and sherbet. In the mouth the beer is spicy and tart, with some grainy sweetness. With age, Emerson’s Weissbier develops a clove-like aroma and the taste becomes softer and more cidery. Bottle Conditioned.

The beer’s aroma offers a fresh ‘bready’, savoury yeastiness with malt and a hint of ripe banana. In the mouth the beer is soft and mouth filling with sweet malt and more banana. A combination of pale and coloured wheat malts produce layers of delicious chocolate, toffee and caramel flavours that gradually give way to a clean slightly tart finish.

A Bavarian cloudy Weiss or Wheat beer brewed to bock strength. The overall impression is a beer that is strong and malty, rich, full bodied and warming. Flavours of chocolate, Christmas cake, raisins, dark fruits and even a hint of Easter spices and clove characters.

A celebration of Southern flavours brewed in conjunction with Southern Clams Ltd. The beer has a dark tawny brown head and a subtle creamy roasty aroma with a hint of vanilla and ocean briny characters. Complex dark roasted characters prevail with more briny notes developing as you delve further into the pint glass.

This exquisite spiced ale, released annually and brewed with the addition of three spices and clover honey from Central Otago is bottle-conditioned prior to release on March 6th every year. Cinnamon and nutmeg notes are evident in the aroma and on the palette with the combination of spices evoking flavours reminiscent of hot-cross buns.

The annual JP release is in honour of the late Professor Jean-Pierre Dufour, formerly Dean of Food Sciences at the University of Otago. Belgium born JP, as he was affectionately known, was an icon in the international brewing industry and a valued friend of The Emerson Brewing Company. Each vintage varies in beer style, flavour and aroma – each brew reflecting one of the many beer styles for which Belgium is renowned.
